Why do we let the society decide what is good and what is bad for us? Why are we always in a double frame of mind when we know exactly what we want? Just because we fear the rights and wrongs enforced upon us by the society? Well yes. Majority of us fall for this trap made by the society. Even if we don’t want to get trapped into it, we tend to get stuck in it and there is no other way round, apparently.
But, wouldn’t everything get so easy if we didn’t give a damn about what people think and do just what we want to do? I don’t want to live my life on the rights and wrongs written by the society. I want to live my life on my terms. Is there anything wrong with this? No. But try living it on your terms and be ready to be opposed by them. There is nothing rebellious about it; it’s just you taking your life in your own hands.
What is right for one might be wrong for another one. That’s the way it is. So do what you feel is right for you. After all it’s your life and you have to deal with it. The society won’t live your life or deal with your problems. It will just be a society. Other than judging you or poking you about your decisions or removing minute faults about it, the society has nothing to do.
If you try being Gandhi in today’s world by the ideology that if you don’t do wrong to others, others won’t do wrong to you, then let me remind you that this ideology will take you down. There are many people out there in the ‘society’ who are just waiting for an opportunity to arise wherein they can bite you down. Even if you do nothing to them, they would do so much to you. An alligator is going to bite you even if you don’t hurt him. That’s the way it is.
In a typical Indian society, you will be judged on whatever you choose to do. Be it the way you dress, the way you carry yourself, the number of friends that you have (especially of the opposite gender), the person you love, the time you step in and out of your house, the education course that you pick up, the job that you get, the car you drive, anything and everything. This society has no other work. It’s upon you now, whether you want to live your life on their terms or yours.
Follow your heart, run behind your dreams, achieve your goals, live through the fun times, enjoy the present moment, drink till you are sloshed, spend money till you wish, do everything that you want to. It’s your life. You won’t get it again. Live it your way. Provided that you don’t regret anything you do. It’s never too late for anything. You never know which moment is your last. Forget the past, you don’t live there anymore and you cannot change it. Don’t worry about the future, everything will fall into place. Live in the present! And don’t let society define you.
